LSP-2697 It Happened At The World’s Fair (Reference Material)

Modified: June 21, 2011

The purpose of this article is to keep the reference guide clean and managable. There is alot of additional and pertinant information that was felt deserving of it’s own reference.

Black label, RCA logo is white, other label print is silver. Flat label. (1964)
This elusive label has gone undiscovered until June 21, 2011, when it was brought to my attention from a collector whom would like to remain anonymous. It is identical to the mega rare Black label, RCA logo is white, other label print is silver, however, it is not rigid, but flat. A label that is more consistant to the orange labels of 1968-1970. I have identified this label as 1964, since that was the year of introduction. This particular copy would more likely to have been pressed in 1968 around the time of transition to the newer orange label.

The seller is unaware of what is being offered and only describes this as:

ELVIS PRESLEY LSP-2697 *IT HAPPENED AT THE WORLD’S FAIR* RECORD ALBUM. ANY BRIGHT WHITE SPOTS ARE FROM THE FLASH OF THE CAMERA AND ARE NOT ON THE VINYL.

Orange Label (1968)
The reference images below are what was used to painstakingly create the mockup images provided in LSP-2697 It Happened At The World's Fair. These images are as close to the originals as possible, you be the judge.

This inexplicable rarity was hidden away for 40 years and was not known to exist until this discovery. These are the images of the actual non-flexible orange label release that was auctioned on eBay on March 1, 2008.

Here is one for the ultimate Elvis collection, MEGA RARE, never identified in any price guide before, not known to exist! I was stunned when I picked this up in a collection a few weeks ago, I have always looked for the rigid vinyl orange label and simply like other collectors believed it did not exist! Well here it is!! This cover is the same cover that was used in earlier variations and it is in very nice shape, does have some light edge wear, but very nice look and feel to it. The record is the value here and it is stunning, just mint in every way, the labels are stunning, the vinyl looks to have never been played. If you want to own something that very few if any collections have, THIS IS IT! I don’t know if we will see another, but the RIGID VINYL ORANGE LABEL “It Happened at the World’s Fair” US release does exist!

Madison Square Garden Tour Photo Book

Modified: August 25, 2010

This Tour Photo Album is the rarest of all tour books. It was only available for sale at Elvis’ Saturday matinee performance at New York’s Madison Square Garden.1 However, other documentation supports that although this tour book may be rare, it was available at more venues, like Las Vegas, NV2, Greensboro, NC.3, or the April 18, 1972 San Antonio Show4 This is the entire tour book.

It is interesting to note, that I pulled this copy of the Tour Photo Album from an incorrectly stored in the “Elvis – Greatest Hits, Volume One” album AHL1-2347.

Cover Front: Color variations exist from extremely an extremely light blue tint to a darker blue. The earliest covers are likely the lighter tinted blues. All gold print is embossed or raised. The cover has a wood grain texture to it and is die cut to expose an image of Elvis from the inner sleeve and has a note on bottom, Enclosed: Illustrated memory log with 4-color picture suitable for framing. The second cover is supposedly introduced in 1977, not pictured, is also a lighter tint blue, die cut, wood grain texture, with note about memory log; however, the gold print is flat. The third cover is the same as the second cover except it is significantly darker blue in tint. The last cover is flat finish with no die cut. The gold print is now a yellowish print. There is no note about a memory log as one is not included with the final re-release.
Cover Back: The first three covers contain the same back with two columns with song titles and additional information in brackets followed by RCA and catalog number bottom center. Copyright bottom center. The final back has an RE lower left corner with a significantly different back that was taken from the inner sleeve of the earlier releases.

Typically the backs with the images of recommended record collections are referred to as “ad backs”. Many cataloging systems identify these “ad backs” by the sequence of the records generally from upper left corner to the lower right corner. While this system works well, this site organizes the records by the phrase found in the yellow box directly above the bottom row of records.

Within the same pressing, CAMDEN, N.J. was removed. An independent study of 1950s RCA Victor albums (33s) and singles (45s and 78s). determined that the CAMDEN, N.J. was removed from the label sometime in 1959, which means that pressings from 1959 and later will not have the CAMDEN, N.J. statement.19

Words in upper case are added in the alternative take: “As the years fast did roll, Old Shep he grew old AND his eyes were fast growing dim.” and “He came to my side and he looked up at me, and HE laid his old head on my knee.”

This alternate take was identified in 1980 from the “Eternal Elvis” and “Rockin’ Rebel Vol. 3” bootleg albums, which was believed to have been taken from the HMV album “Elvis Presley No. 2” from England.36 This is interesting because it took even longer, over 25 years from the first release of this album, to determine that this song variation existed on a U.S. release.

This is the original printed in the U.S.A. release for the U.S. Armed Forces stationed in Germany that was distributed in 1956 (?) and 1957. The cover and the record label read Printed in U.S.A. In the trail-off area of the record Manufactured in Germany is machine stamped. The cover reads LPM-1382 on both sides. The record label reads LPM-1382. It has the PX stamp on the back cover.
