eBay My Boy US Made for UKeBay Loving Arms US Made for UK

Generic Sleeve: RCA in orange and an RCA in green on green and white background with Ptd. in U.S.A. on one side and 21-107-1 PT4.1

The generic RCA sleeve has a similar look to the common RCA sleeve printed in England. This one differs in that it is printed in the U.S.A. The record needed to be shipped in something, so RCA printed these sleeves for export.2 RCA did ship other RCA exports to England during this time, there are well documented, David Bowie singles and are likely others. The sleeve is likely not unique to this release. It is likely the same sleeve used with other exports of this period, but confirmation is needed. The sleeve is scarce and this catalog number is not complete without it.

rca-2458ex-cover-side1rca-2458ex-cover-side2

Insert: front and back. No picture sleeve was created for this release.

The insert was done for Customs ID purposes, as well as to identify the contents of the cartons US sent to UK. It is not believed that there is an insert for each record, maybe only one insert per case.2

Disc: (1974) Gray label. Manufactured in the U.S. for overseas distribution due to strikes in the U.K.
Matrix numbers: RCA 2458A 1 / RCA 2458B 1

There were many events leading to a severe energy conservation imposed by the UK government which began from December 17, 1973 industrial and commercial users were limited to five days consumption and beginning December 31, 1973 they would be limited to three specified consecutive days each week and prohibited from working longer hours on those days.4 On Janaury 7, 1974, the three-day work week began for industry pushing over 885,000 to register for unemployment benefits.4 On February 9, 1974, a national miner’s strike began as a result of the Government refusing to compromise on a 7% pay rise, and the situation lead to a state of emergency and introduction a three day working week.6 An agreement to end the strike was readched on March 6, 1974, On March 7, 1974, the Energy Secretary ordered a return at midnight to a five-day working week but retained restrictions on the use of electricity. The miners return to work on March 11, 1974.4 This disruption in industry is directly attributed to the US manufacturing of this release for distribution in the UK.

Cover: picture sleeve front and back. The cover may have a thumb slit on one side or not. The fold is from the front “Burning Love” to the back of the sleeve “It’s A Matter of Time”

I hadn’t really paid much attention to this cover, until now. The cover with the thumb slit is one of three that I have seen. The inconsistencies of it’s cut is identical to other Elvis releases of this era.

Matrix numbers: BPKM-1257-?S / BPKM-1260-?S (Rockaway pressing)

It is interesting to note that the labels for this Rockaway pressing do not resemble the regular release of this single pressed at Rockaway. They look like those labels used by Indianapolis.

BEWARE OF FAKES ON EBAY! There are many tells. Most obvious ones are font sizes for the writers names are too small, dark font for the matrix numbers, and on both sides of the record, Sumner is misspelled as Summer.

This is the last catalog number in the Elvis Presley singles releases to be found with a horizontal line. Regardless of what the price guides may indicate, this one is nearly impossible to track down a copy. For that reason, I believe that it’s value is greatly underappreciated and should be reconsidered. Maybe one per thousands of offerings to be found and that is being generous. I have seen only five copies period! The highest recorded sale is $499.99 on Feb. 16, 2020. This copy was in good condition.2 A copy sold for $181.20 on May 3, 20203 .

One, includes the “New Orthophonic” High Fidelity Recording statement, where it’s box size is smaller than those without that statement. The first two record covers with black RCA Victor logo are not documented anywhere else and are extremely difficult to find. I had emailed, Paul Lichter, who authored “The Boy Who Dared To Rock” among many books, publications, and website achievements. I am honored to have received a couple of emails from him. Paul Lichter wrote in part:
“Many thanks. I have visited your site and read your article, quite fascinating. I think it is great that you are the true student on what I consider to be a great art form. People like yourself rekindle my interest, thank you.” “Your Good Luck Charm discovery certainly proves my theory” that different versions for the compact 33 and their 45 counterparts exist with at least two variations.

It’s Now or Never had no piano on the master.9 A rare variation of this single exists where this version of It’s Now or Never was pressed without the piano track. Presleyana V identifies this variation as having a Hollywood pressing label, however, a couple of eBay auctions have confirmed that it is a Rockaway pressing. This is confirmed by the visual identification of the matrix number on the record or the item description and the label of other Rockaway labels.

This two sided hit single debuted on the Top 40 chart with It’s Now Or Never peaking at number one for five weeks. Nearly a week later, A Mess of Blues debuted on the charts and peaked at number 32.10 An interesting point to this is on page 45 of the July 11, 1960 edition of Billboard magazine. Billboard reviews A Mess of Blues as the hit side and It’s Now or Never as the flip side. It is written “Elvis handles a fine blues with his usual feeling on the top side and comes thru with a great reading of a familiar melody on the other. Both sides are potent.”11

This was also released in stereo It's Now Or Never / A Mess Of Blues in 1960.
Re-released by RCA Records on 45 RPM as It's Now Or Never / A Mess Of Blues on the Gold Standard Series label.
