Heartbreak Hotel / I Was The One

Modified: February 28, 2015

Artist: Elvis Presley
Release: RCA Victor 07863-62449-7 Heartbreak Hotel / I Was The One (45)
Release Date: 1997

07863-62449-7-layer1-plq07863-62449-7-layer1-plq

Cover: Actually, this is a plaque composed of a piece of glass with black plastic frame.

07863-62449-7-layer1-plq07863-62449-7-layer2-plq07863-62449-7-layer2-plq-side207863-62449-7-layer2-plq-upc

Breakdown: The removal of the glass is easy, it pops out of the top of the frame. The next layer is a piece of white cardboard which has a graphic featuring an interpretation of EPA-821. The next layer is a white gloss piece of paper with two gold intersecting circles centered with two Elvis Presley signatures in gold boxes positioned at the upper left corner and lower right corner. The back of the white paper has a UPC affixed which reads PLATINUM PLAQUES, HEARTBREAK HOTEL – 1956. 7-4191490077-1 (c) 1997 KRB MUSIC COMPANIES MADE IN U.S.A.

Disc: 447-0605. 1976. Gold Standard. Black label, dog near top. Gold Standard on side.

07863-62449-7-side1-blk07863-62449-7-side2-blk

Disc: 1997. Black label, dog near top. 45 RPM NEW ORTHOPHONIC HIGH FIDELITY on right side. Catalog number on left side with (Stereo Commercial) directly under catalog number. Gladys Music. Label on the back side is blank as it was never intended to be seen.
Matrix numbers: 47-6420 A / 47-6420 B (hand etched) (unknown pressing)

There are so many differences between this release and the 47-6420 and the 07863-62449-7 (1992) releases that this record deserved its own entry. The original 47-6420 has Tree Publ. Co. as the publishing company. This release is Gladys Music. The original release has G2WW-0209 for the matrix number for the 7″ mono 45 RPM, where this release is G2WB-0209 which is correct for the 10″ mono 78 RPM. 47-6420 has Heartbreak Hotel paired with I Was The One. 47-7420 is hand etched into the trail-off area of the vinyl and play tested true. However, the Heartbreak Hotel side has the catalog number of 07863-62449-7. Where when last used in 1992 on the silver label, the flip-side was Hound Dog. The copyright information on the bottom of the label is reminiscent of the 1960s black labels, dog on top labels. One final oddity. Stereo Commercial is not consistent with NEW ORTHOPHONIC HIGH FIDELITY, which is actually a reference to Monaural. Is it stereo? Further more scientific methods need to be used, however, play tested by ear only, seems to play stereo.

A possible reason for the existence of this record is that the stock copies of 447-0605 were depleted and this filled the final orders. Just speculation. A quick Internet search reveals out of 10 or so copies of the Platinum Plaque for this release, 3 exist with this label and pressing variations.

This record was brought to my attention and discovered by Paul Dowling of World Wide Records in September 2014. After realizing that the late release plaques have yielded other interesting anomalies, I researched this record towards that direction and it did not disappoint. This record has eluded detection for nearly 17 years, it is rare!

This album cover is so elusive, all collectors once agreed that it simply did not exist. Today, there are four known copies. September 6, 2014 a copy surfaced in Italy with an import sticker. Purchased new, this one-time owner later sold this copy in a private sale. On March 3, 2015, a second copy was found in a collection in Florida, USA, without an import sticker affixed to the cover. A third copy turned up in Dublin, Ireland and offered for sale on eBay in May 2016. This copy sold for almost $540 shipped. A fourth copy was found in Ireland. All known copies contain the APL1 record. The date of the record is an estimate based on the other releases of that time.

Two copies have documented sales. On June 2, 2016, a copy with an import sticker, in VG+ condition sold for nearly $540 shipped.3 The second copy is from the Florida find mentioned above. It sold on eBay for $560.11 on Jun 25, 2016.4

The Amazing World of Short Wave Listening

Modified: July 24, 2014

It has long been asserted that this promotional record, the Amazing World of Short Wave Listening, contains a clip from Elvis Presley. It is even suggested that the song clip is from the movie soundtrack Loving You or Loving You. Unless there is more than one version of this record, the song and artist is now properly identified. It wasn’t an easy task. After playing the sound clip repeatedly, it had become obvious that the voice was not Elvis, the lyrics were not Elvis, and the song was not Elvis. A few lyrics were identifiable as “You didn’t even say goodbye…”, and a quick Internet search identified the song and artist as Paul Anka and song as I’m Still Waiting Here For You.

theamazingworldofshortwavelistening

Hear for yourself these clips made available on YouTube. Note that these videos are not made available by this site or person, however, made available through others. Start the following clip at 3:38/13:37 to hear the original clip.

Hallicrafters “The Amazing World of Short Wave Listening” (1959)

The song as it was released on vinyl in 1963 on Paul Anka’s 21 Golden Hits LP (RCA Victor LPM-2691) doesn’t sound anything like the version that is on the sound clip on this promotional record as can be heard from this video.

Paul Anka – I’m Still Waiting Here For You

Lastly, this YouTube video definitively proves that the song is Paul Anka singing I’m Still Waiting Here For You as performed in an appearance in the movie Let’s Rock from June 1958.

So, before you go out to buy a copy of this record in hopes to get another piece of Presleyana, you may be disappointed.

Fourteen tunes, formerly available on Presley’s LP’s or EP’s

Modified: February 19, 2020

I’ve always been a little curious behind the releases of seven 45 RPMs ranging in sequential catalog numbers from 20/47-6636 through 20/47-6642.

The answer was made clear in September 21, 1956 in an RCA Victor publication called Deejay Digest.

deejay339cover

For the millions of Elvis Presley fans who couldn’t afford his LP and EP’s but desperately wanted a few of the selections, RCA Victor is making available in single form, 14 sides from the amazing lad’s packaged disks. The seven platters display the versatile star on slow and fast number, rock ‘n’ roll and country numbers, and even a Rodgers and Hart song, “Blue Moon”. It won’t be at all surprising if as many as a half dozen hit the best seller lists. And the way this kid is selling records, it’s possible that all 14 will make it. The seven record set is a sensational release for juke box operators. Each disk is sure to be a solid money-maker.1

Fourteen tunes, formerly available on Presley’s LP’s or EP’s, now available on seven singles, within reach of any kid with 89 cents.1

The Elvis Presley Manufactured in Germany Discography

Modified: June 21, 2013

This discography of records is of those that were only made and sold to US soldiers based in Europe and probably only in Germany. A unique characteristic of these records is the black label with the use of Nipper. The Nipper logo was not authorized for RCA Europe. The label also reads “MADE IN U.S.A”. The trail-off area of the vinyl is stamped “Manufactured in Germany”. A PX stamp should be found on the back of the cover.1

45-insert-german45-cover-german

Additionally, there is a plastic grey triangle with the German text which reads: Bei dickem Zapfen Mittelstück herausdrücken. This can be translated as: With large center spindle push the centerpiece out. The pictured generic RCA cover may be found with many or all of 45s.23

While this discography will specifically list the releases with the explicit characteristics detailed above, there are additional titles that were distributed to the U.S. soldiers based in Germany that do not contain any reference to MADE IN U.S.A., however, both printed and pressed in Germany and possess the PX stamp.

This page may be used as a quick reference guide. Additional detail, as the detail arrives, will be provided on the individual pages throughout this site.

Special thanks to Urs Mosimann (from Switzerland), Christian (of France), and Roberto (from Italy) for their invaluable assistance. This page would not have been possible without them.
