Cover: picture sleeve front and back. On the Suspicious Minds side, the Soon available Elvis on RCA Cassettes and copyright info is in blue. There is no thumb notch at the top of the sleeve. This sleeve is slightly larger and textured not slick.

Discovered July 2014, this sleeve offers many unique characteristics. Slight larger in size, textured non slick paper, blue font for the Soon available- Elvis on RCA Cassettes with copyright info Printed in U.S.A. and no notch at the top of the sleeve for easy access to the record. While this cover is interesting, it is not a one-of-a-kind. Recent eBay searches have found a couple of other copies, each with a German single. This is just speculation, however, the cover may have been used with German pressings of this title and may have been found with U.S. vinyl as well, as other copies have been found with U.S pressings.

This is an interesting label as it does not resemble any other Hollywood pressing labels. The label is more characteristic of a Rockaway or Indianapolis pressing label, however, with a very distinctive difference in the size of the 45 RPM font on the right side. Elvis records preceding this and those released after this release all share the distinctive characteristic of 45 R.P.M. and New Orthophonic High Fidelity on right side.

The Stay Away, Joe track appears on two consecutive Camden albums – the other album being CAS-2408 Let's Be Friends. RCA recognized this and replaced the track with Stay Away, an entirely different song. It has long been asserted that this change occurred in 1973, from sources dating back to 1976.9 However, new evidence suggests that early 1972 is more likely. First consider the confusion. The official RCA Listing Notice dated 8/24/1970 lists the track as “Stay Away, Joe”.10 CAL-2428 Elvis' Christmas Album released 10/1/1970 and CALX-2472 You'll Never Walk Alone released 3/22/1971 lists the track as “Stay Away”. It wasn’t until the release of CAL-2533 I Got Lucky in 10/1971 that the track is listed as “Stay Away, Joe”. Two more Camden releases CAS-2595 Burning Love and Hits From His Movies, Volume 2 in 11/1/1972 and CAS-2611 Separate Ways in 12/1/1972 also lists “Stay Away, Joe.” Now consider the evidence. A copy was purchased in 5/12/1972 with “Stay Away”. The details of the purchase date is on the original shrink-wrap purchased by the original owner.11

Inner Sleeves
To identify the inner sleeve that is most appropriate for each release, look at the Inner Sleeves page on this site.

Depending on the source, the release date of this LP is either 2/20/1967 or 3/8/1967. It charted 3/25/1967 and peaked at number 18 to remain on the charts for 29 weeks. The Grammy Awards were held 2/29/1968. All copies of this record that I have seen with the Grammy Award Winner sticker have had the 20-112-21 40D insert, which is 6/1968. Additional reading has indicated a great push for Elvis in 11/1968, which is when the orange label LPs were introduced. The Grammy Award Winner sticker was only around for a few months. The Grammy Award Winner printed on back was likely introduced in the 11/1968 push.89101112

RCA Introduces the 45 EP “Extended Play” Record Format

Modified: September 4, 2013

RCA Records introduces the 45 RPM Extended Play record. An extended play (EP) is a vinyl record which contains more music than a single, generally twice as much music, but is too short to qualify as an LP.

EPs were introduced as compilations or samplers and typically played at 45 RPM. Some later releases were playable at 33 1/3 RPMs. The 33s were more common as special releases for jukeboxes and for common retail releases in various countries throughout the world.

Here is a very early advertisement introducing the extended play record. RCA Records introduces the 45 RPM Extended Play record. “Twice as much music on ONE “45 EXTENDED PLAY” record!” Neat ad that I came across some years ago.

rcaintroduces45

The RCA Victor 45 Extended Play Albums advantages are detailed in this gatefold of RCA Victor 45EP SPD 2 Music for Dining by the Melachrino Strings and Music for Daydreaming by Hugo Winterhalter and his orchestra.

spd-2-cover-side1spd-2-gatefoldx1000

RCA Victor offers four advantages in this offering of the Extended Play Albums.

  • Longer Playing Time – up to 16 minutes of music, at least four complete selections on every Popular record.
  • Savings up to 40 per cent – The selections of two 12-inch 78 rpm records priced at $2.62 can now be purchased on a single 45 EP record for only $1.58.
  • Uninterrupted Muisc – the music is uninterrupted – no breaks except those the composer intended.
  • Easy to Play, Easy to Store – 45 Extended Play records operate on either a standard 45 rpm or three-speed player. Their convenient size greatly reduces storage problems.
