Intended as an in-house only commemorative release, RCA Victor made only a few dozen copies — some say around 50 — thus accounting for the rarity factor. This promotional only record was made in 1973 as a souvenir of Sarnoff’s retirement party.

The RCA Victor Record Bulletin Record Sleeve Is Fake

Modified: December 4, 2024

Disclaimer: This article does NOT suggest that there has been any wrong doing in any part of any sale related to this sleeve or even in its inclusion into any publication as describing this sleeve as authentic. This article DOES more than suggest that this sleeve cannot be anything more than a fantasy sleeve.

There is a picture sleeve that had surfaced on eBay and sold in auction on July 12, 2011 for $2,224. Part of the description reads as follows, “This Picture Sleeve and 45 were obtained through an estate. The[y] were found framed along with other Elvis Sun 45s. Not much is know[n] about the person who these belonged to. As the expert’s best guess was this was a traveling salesman’s promotional item.”1. This picture sleeve has became a topic of conversation with respected book author and researcher, Neal Umphred. He raised into question the “nebulous” detail about this sleeve that was provided in the article Mystery Train / I Forgot to Remember to Forget.

Since this find, the sleeve has been under scrutiny by some collectors; however, readily accepted by others as being original. It is a buyer beware world, particularly when a description of an auction generalizes the province of a piece with language that includes “obtained through an estate sale”. This find even worked its way into the pages of the Presleyana VI book where the picture of Elvis’ concert photo is incorrectly identified as taken from the Louisiana Hayride.

There are so many inconsistencies in design and content of this “RCA Victor Record Bulletin” sleeve that was supposedly released on December 2, 1955 to prove without a doubt it is nothing more than a fantasy sleeve.

47-6357-cover-side1-promo47-6357-cover-side2-promo

Wrapped around both sides of the sleeve feature an RCA Victor Record Bulletin23 This record bulletin was printed on November 28, 1955.

19551128-elvis

The back of the sleeve features a picture of Colonel Parker, Eddy Arnold, Elvis and Steve Sholes. This picture was taken December 1, 1955 in New York.4

19551201-elvis

The front of the sleeve features a photo of Elvis Presley. It hasn’t been questioned until now as to when or where this picture was taken. On April 21, 1956 Elvis performed two shows in Houston, TX. City Auditorium at 7:30 PM and 9:30 PM.56

This picture68 was taken on that date.

1956-0421-elvis

Without going into the horrific design of this sleeve, which doesn’t fit any of the design practices used by RCA in that era or any era, the facts are in the dates. The sleeve was printed on December 2, 1955, using a photo taken of Colonel Parker, Eddy Arnold, Elvis, and Steve Sholes on December 1, 1955. There’s also a wrap-around bulletin with a November 28, 1955, date. It would have been a monumental task to develop the film, copy the bulletin, and provide the material to a designer to create the sleeve. Then, the process would have required approval, printing, creating plates, and more. None of that matters, however, when you take into consideration the most glaring problem with this sleeve: the photo of Elvis Presley that was taken nearly five months later, on April 21, 1956.

Gold Standard Series (Dog Near Top) Label Variations

Modified: February 21, 2023

The Gold Standard Series 45 RPM records have been gaining momentum among collectors in recent years. The series that began with the black label, dog on top labels in 1958 had evolved throughout the years to the black label, dog on side (1965), orange label (1968), red label (1970), to the black label, dog near top in 1977.

While there are some notable variations in each of the different releases throughout the years, none has received less attention to documentation than the black label, dog near top labels from 1977 onward. Not only are their variations, complete runs may exist in each of the variations, making this series not only noteworthy; however, worthy of separation into sub-series.

Before continuing, there are variations that at this moment cannot or will not document. These variations include glossy vs the common dull labels and the labels that appear to have a rough crystallization or white texture on them. These labels are likely as a result of poor quality control; however, can be seen in great quantity. It can be remembered buying such labels while new back in the 1970s.

447-0607-1977-side1 447-0664-side1-crystal

Another variation that will not make catalog as a complete series is the copyright information may vary on the bottom of the labels.

447-0635-1977-side2-v3 447-0635-2000-side1

Up until September 2020, there were only two label variations of note. The Gold Standard in white letters directly under the RCA logo. These can be tough to find and only about 25 or so different catalog numbers have been identified with this label. The common label, is where the GOLD STANDARD is located on the right side of the label, directly above the catalog number. Then, there is the recently discovered and notable variation, small RCA logo and small dog. The Victrola is of slightly different design too. This label has been identified with over 30 different catalog numbers. Below is a picture of each of the three main variations..

447-0636-1977-side2-gsstop 447-0636-1976-side1-lglogo 447-0636-1976-side1-smlogo

To illustrate the significance of the size differential, I have painstakingly overlaid two identical labels to completely align the text.

447-0636-rca-variations3

The difference in sizes is approx. 1.16″x.33″ for the small RCA to 1.31″x.77″ for the large RCA. This may mean that I have to redo each of the entries for the Gold Standards to accommodate this newest find. Some matrix numbers will be lost in the shuffle as they were assigned to the black label, dog near top with no differentiation for small and large RCA and Nipper. However, since there are two sizes for RCA. The larger of the two sizes have been around since the orange labels.
So the distinction will be made only for the smaller RCA. The other RCA size will be considered only as RCA, the standard size. Stay tuned, this will likely evolve into a mess.

This prototype EP was part of a series of EPs designed for Elvis’ first ’69 Vegas appearance to be made available only for the people who attended the first night’s show. The design was heavily influenced by the releases of many of the European countries, such as England, Germany and France, where their EPs were produced on glossy, laminated covers. While no record exists, there were two prototype sleeves created. Originally, these images were provided for use on this site with the condition that there be additional watermarks and slightly modified, not to the point to detract from their original intention, however to protect the original integrity of the prototype covers.1 However, with the latest development of these sleeves being offered on eBay and sold for $1036.64. The images on this site have been corrected.2

Disc: 1963. Stereo. Black label, All print on label print is silver. Staggered STEREO on bottom of label. No “STEREO ORTHOPHONIC” HIGH FIDELITY on label.

This record made the site for a couple of reasons. First, Elvis’ Golden Records, Volume 3 LPM/LSP-2765 is listed on the back of the cover from a list of “Other RCA Victor albums you will enjoy.” The second, I find particularly interesting. This is a Staggered STEREO label which now places the Staggered STEREO label well into late 1963 (at least August 1963).
