Cover front: Paper, red, black and white. RCA Victor logo and number at upper right. Black and white photo of Elvis and of LPM-1382.
Cover back: Text, no photo. Has number, “SPA 7-37” at upper right.1 In some cases, the folding and cut of the cover, may make no reference to the catalog number on the back, or as seen in this example, a partial reference to the catalog number.

Disc: Black label, dog on top, with horizontal silver line. NOT FOR SALE on one line. HIGHLIGHTS (not HIGHLIGHTER) below PERFECT FOR PARTIES3
Matrix numbers: G2NH-7231-6S A2 / G2NH-7232-6S A1 B (Indianapolis pressing)4

Discovered in 2015, it had gone unnoticed for nearly 60 years! The matrix number is an indicator that this is a very limited pressing with this label from the Indianapolis plant. While more copies are likely to turn up, at least two copies are known to exist.

Disc: Black label, dog on top. One Side 1 with horizontal silver line. NOT FOR SALE on one line. HIGHLIGHTS (not HIGHLIGHTER) below PERFECT FOR PARTIES. One Side 2 without horizontal silver line. NOT FOR SALE on two lines and correct HIGHLIGHTER.
Matrix numbers: G2NH-7231-6S A2 / G2NH-7232-6S B1 (machine stamped) (Indianapolis pressing)

This is a real oddball. A transitional pressing with one error HIGHLIGHTS with line label on side one and on side two a no line label with corrected HIGHLIGHTER.

Advertisement Campaign
One consensus is that the Elvis Presley “Perfect for Parties” Highlight Album was a give away with the purchase of a RCA Records record player of a specific model. While that may be true, various advertisements and articles do not support that theory. It is likely that dealers may have stocked up on this EP on their own with purchases from the advertisements to create their own promotion. It is also possible that there was left over stock that was distributed to dealers to distribute through various promotions. Whatever the case may be, the “Perfect for Parties” Highlight Album was made available through mail order with coupons. Below is a one page advertisement offered the special $1.49 value Perfect for Parties Highlight Album (SPA-7-37) for only 25 cents. Along with that offer is an extra special offer for $1.00 to buy 7×7 color prints of all 20 album covers shown. The offer expired on December 31, 1956. These may or may not be the ones offered in the advertisement, however, Presleyana V describes a set of 15 EP front cover slicks offered to jukebox operators for display behind the glass on jukeboxes. Those slicks are valued at $500.

A closeup of the record cover in the advertisement compared against the actual release. There are many differences, the position of Elvis, the font, the position of the words, the order of the images, and the lace of art in the background.

The following promotional material is obtained from an October 1956 issue of Billboard. Ironically, it is a promotion for the promotion.

billboard-1956-10xx-perfectforparties

The Perfect for Parties EP highlights the RCA Victor November album release schedule at a promotional campaign cost of nearly $165,000 (est. as high as $5,447,000 in 2008 dollars). The disk with a limited press run that was not to exceed 500,000 units was mainly offered through consumer ads and not through dealers. This is a quote on page 17 in the November 17, 1956, Billboard, “The disks will definitely not be dispensed through dealers, but the sole aim of the promotion is to hypo interest in the line, which can be purchased only in shops.”

Inner Sleeves

Modified: September 18, 2016

Among other components in the packaging of a record is the inner sleeve. The purpose of the inner sleeve was to originally protect the record from the elements. The inner sleeve evolved into an effective marketing tool by introducing the buyer to other formats and other releases from the RCA Victor catalog.

Early Elvis Presley releases on the RCA Victor record label were packaged with either a generic paper inner sleeve featuring the RCA Victor logo or rice paper, as seen with some copies of LPM-1254. In the late 1950’s, inner sleeve depicted other releases from the RCA Victor catalog of various artists including a few from the Elvis Presley catalog. By 1959, Elvis records were packaged with inner sleeves featuring only the Elvis Presley catalog. This marketing strategy would continue for the rest of Elvis’ career.

To match the “correct” inner sleeve for a particular release is not an exact science. Generally the inner sleeve corresponds to the year the record was produced. For example, if a record was released in late 1963, the inner sleeve of that year would likely be the sleeve associated with that record release; however, earlier sleeves may be found packaged with this release as RCA exhausted their existing supply of sleeves. In other cases, later sleeves may be found as the record was re-released over a period of years. In some cases, a generic RCA sleeve may have been used. Some interim releases had only white sleeves. Some RCA Camden releases were not packaged with inner sleeves.

This gallery exists to assist in the identification of the inner sleeve that is most appropriate to a release.

Sticker: Gold “gift” sticker with To and From at the top followed by ELVIS SINGS with track listings. The sticker on the left has been identified as an original sticker by the contributor. Although the sticker on the right was sold as an original, the contributor has questioned its authenticity.1 A third sticker exists with Printed In The U.S.A. directly below the song title, It is No Secret2

Some scrutinize over the authenticity and origin of the gold gift sticker. A recent discovery of an original 1957 commercial featuring this album does not contain the sticker or mention it in its promotion; that alone is not conclusive. There are those that would believe that this sticker is a fabrication. Others contend that this is a promotional sticker designed by one or more large retail chains of that era and either by the direction of RCA or not. Then there are those that believe that this sticker was part of the original packaging, affixed to the plastic baggie and not the cover, as intended by RCA. Whichever the case may be, the sticker exists, is collectible, and is very rare. A variation exists with Printed In the U.S.A. printed on the sticker. It has turned up on Canadian copies of the LP where the cover was also printed in the U.S.A. It is believed that since this was an import, it must be identified as such, hence Printed In the U.S.A.3

The Indianapolis pressing example with RPRS-6163-17S B4 / RPRS-6164-24S A3 matrix numbers was taken from a sealed copy. After being sealed for 44 years, it was just opened on December 8, 2012 to determine if it was an orange label or not. The cover has the red stereo sticker applied to the cover, the shrink-wrap was different from others that I have seen, where the seam of the wrap is down the middle of the cover back. There is even a notchout at the top indicating that the record was deleted. Even with all these signs, the label is the flat label variation, black label.

A flat black label copy of Elvis’ Christmas Album in shrink sold on November 18, 2012 for $146.50 plus shipping on eBay.2
