Sleeve: Originally issued in generic brown.

In November 1998, Graham Knight rediscovered two Elvis Presley singles he bought in 1968 while in Memphis. The two unmarked, metal plates were bought for just 30 cents. One plate features “That’s All Right Mama” originally released as Sun 209. The other plate “Mystery Train” on Sun 223.11 The other sides two these records have never been found. In 2005, the Memphis Recording Service released “Elvis Presley – Memphis Recording Service – The Beginning of Elvis Presley – The Birth of Rock n’ Roll, volume 1: 1953-1954”. This package includes a DVD audio disc, a 100 page book, and a 45 RPM record. The record is “That’s All Right Mama” pressed with the metal plate complete with push-marks discovered by Graham Knight. The other side of the record is blank.12 Since “That’s All Right Mama” is pressed from a metal plate that had been in various states of storage for nearly 50 years, the playback will reflect all the imperfections of the metal plate. While the record is valued at $20 in the most recent edition of Presleyana VII, realized auction prices do not reflect this value. On March 6, 2010, a copy sold for $20013. More recently, a copy sold for $17514. These auction prices may be due to the lack of information or misinformation provided in the auction detail or that there is a general demand for this particular re-issue. Buyer beware, no original pressing of this single is known to exist with only one side pressed.

Released in 1954 by Sun Records on 78 RPM as That's All Right / Blue Moon of Kentucky.

Something from Elvis’ wardrobe for you envelope with a swatch of Elvis’ wardrobe. Pictured are two examples of Elvis swatches. An 11″x33″ full color pullout portrait reproduction of Elvis.

A letter written by Ms. Ria Ruiz, the head supervisor at Taylor Stitch & Company in 1971, recalls the staff was instructed to cut 125,000 inch squares swatches from various pieces of Elvis Presley’s personal wardrobe to be included in the August 1971 release of “Elvis” The Other Sides – Worldwide Gold Award Hits, Volume 2.1 Billboard reported that RCA is “only packaging the first 150,000 albums off the press with the swatches.”2 The takeaway here is that these swatches are rare.

Cover Front: RCA Victor logo and number at upper right. May or may not have sticker on front with contents list. The sticker may show Side 2 Track 4 as either The Girl Next Door or “The Girl Next Door Went A’ Walking”1. The second cover front has contents printed on front cover with “Girl Next Door Went A’ Walking” with RE lower left corner. In any case, the contents on the cover will be the same as those listed on the label on the vinyl.

This cover is unique in that unlike all other simultaneous stereo and mono releases, the cover slics are unique. Note the positioning of the album title Elvis is Back! where Elvis is above Elvis’ left ear. On the Stereo release, the title and song titles are shifted down so that the Living Stereo bar across the top could be placed. In this case, the title part Elvis is on top of Elvis’ left ear. Also note that the RCA copyright on the lower left corner of the monaural covers is in white lettering and on the stereo covers is in black lettering. All covers after this release used one front album slic and shifted the cover downward so that the stereo catalog numbers appear on top of the cover or shifted upward so that the monaural catalog numbers appear on bottom.

lsp-2231-cover-side1-miraclesurface

A note about the black oblong “MIRACLE SURFACE” sticker. It reads, “This record contains the revolutionary new antistatic ingredient, 317X, which helps keep the record dust free, helps prevent surface noise, helps insure faithful sound reproduction on LIVING STEREO records.” It can be found on many LIVING STEREO titles of that period and in great numbers. However with this title, Elvis Is Back!, it can be nearly impossible to track one down. Two copies were found in Italy. This is a mockup of one of those copies, complete with the yellow sticker.23

Update: November 28, 2020. I am making a bold assertion based on other Living Stereo pressings by other artists on the RCA label during this period, a pattern can be seen. Copies with the Living Stereo and Miracle Surface printed on the cover as a banner with the RCA Victor box directly below, as seen with this Elvis Is Back! will NOT have the Miracle Surface sticker. Releases with the Living Stereo and the RCA Victor box in the banner and without the Miracle Surface directly printed on the cover may be found with the Miracle Surface sticker. Look for yourself. That being said, these copies found with the Miracle Surface sticker are likely done in error further strengthening their position as scarce!

Sticker: Contains contents. The sticker may be 3.25″ x 3″ in size and show Side 2 Track 4 as The Girl Next Door or be 3.25″ x 3.25″ in size and show “The Girl Next Door Went A’ Walking”.

This is the likely order in which this album was released, for both the monaural and stereo releases. “The Girl Next Door” – no sticker, no contents on cover. “The Girl Next Door” – with sticker, no contents on cover. “The Girl Next Door Went A’ Walking” – with sticker, no contents on cover. “Girl Next Door Went A’ Walking” – no sticker, contents on cover. As a general rule, the cover should match the contents on the label of the record. Also note the “corrected” sticker with “The Girl Next Door Went A’ Walking” is also the incorrect title, as the title on the printed cover and all vinyl releases is Girl Next Door Went A’ Walking dropping the “The” from the title.

Cover Front: RCA Victor logo and number at upper right. May or may not have sticker on front with contents list. The sticker may show Side 2 Track 4 as either The Girl Next Door or “The Girl Next Door Went A’ Walking”. The second cover will have contents printed on front cover with Girl Next Door Went A’ Walking and RE lower left corner. In any case, the contents on the cover will be the same as those listed on the label on the vinyl.

An example of the second cover exists with the “The Girl Next Door Went A’ Walking” sticker on the cover. For the convenience of Disk Jockeys, the sticker was applied to the cover since the printed song sequence is incorrect. The sticker contains the correct song sequence. Another unusual detail about the sticker is that it measures 3.25″ x 3″ and NOT 3.25″ x 3.25″ as other “The Girl Next Door Went A’ Walking” stickers measure.1

Sticker: Contains contents. The sticker may be 3.25″ x 3″ in size and show Side 2 Track 4 as The Girl Next Door or be 3.25″ x 3.25″ in size and show “The Girl Next Door Went A’ Walking”. A variation of “The Girl Next Door Went A’ Walking” sticker exists, where it measures 3.25″ x 3″.

Elvis Presley 45 RPM Record Guide (US) Gold Standard Series Matrix

Modified: February 20, 2023

This is the Elvis Presley 45 RPM Record Guide (US) Gold Standard Series Matrix. The RCA Victor Gold Standard Series are re-releases of the original RCA catalog. The re-releases have been re-cataloged and had changed labels throughout their release history. Early Gold Standard Series records were black label dog on top, later black label dog on side, to orange, red, and back to a black label in 1976. This matrix or cheat sheet is compiled through years of research searching the Internet, eBay, various discographies, and price guides. The prices are expressed in US Dollars and were assessed around 2008. The intent of the prices is to demonstrate the rarity of these records. Where there are no prices, these records either do not exist or have yet been accounted.1

Sometime ago, I read an article on the Internet about a large collection of baseball cards from the turn of the 20th century that was recently discovered. A major card dealer flew to the source and was amazed at the find. The quality and quantity of the collection was spectacular. Variations such as player poses and colors were discovered and cataloged for the very first time. This was a most complete set of cards of that era. The dealer had lists of collectors whom may be interested in cards of that era to complete their respective sets. For the most part, price guides listed the majority of the cards identified from that collection. Regardless of condition, the major stars or known lesser printed cards valued into the high $100s to $1000s where the remaining cards considered as commons. The dealer obtained want lists from major collectors and dealers from around the world. When compiling the want lists together an interesting pattern emerged. Cards that were once considered common are actually quite rare, perhaps some of the rarest in the set. Some of these cards were to be found on each of the want lists. This of course, starting bidding wars. The purpose of this story is this. The Gold Standard Series records were all released in a series. 447-0600 through 447-0685 over a period spanning the late 1950s through the late 1970s. It has generally been accepted that one may find a similar quantity of one catalog number as would find of another, meaning that the price range would be similar. However, I contend that this is NOT the case. Since this site began in 2009, many collectors have offered their collections as scans for all to see. Internet searches, eBay searches, and communicating with other collectors with collections both great and small, it has become clear that there are some catalog numbers that are NOT available regardless of the label, and in some cases label dependent. Case in point, 447-0612! After five years, I have seen my first copy of 447-0612. A black-label, dog on top example at that. This is also listed in the guides as being pressed with black-label, dog on side, orange label, red label, and black-label, dog near top. With all of those pressings, you would think this is more readily available. It is in my opinion, that the guides have this one wrong, and a hand full of others too. Another example 447-0641 black-label, dog on top! Very difficult to find. The other labels for that catalog number are also difficult to find, but not as much as the black-label, dog on top. Happy hunting!

Although, the Gold Standard Series collection were more likely to have been originally issued with the first two sleeve, generic sleeves may also have been used. Through the years, later pressings would have been issued with the later sleeves as shown.

Gold Standard Series – Confirmed

The key to the table has been a work-in-progress since March 2015 are for the following notations:

  • C represents visually confirmed by elvisrecords.com
  • X represents the existence as found in years of price guides and has not been seen by elvisrecords.com or by anyone whom this site has been in contact with since 2009.
  • ? exists as a determination has not yet been made
  • A blank space indicates that it likely does not exist

As of December 17, 2020, an additional column updates this table by making the distinction between the dog near top labels as small or standard size RCA and Victor dog logos. At the time of this writing, both sizes seem to exist in near equal numbers for the most part. Sometime in early 2021, the tables got corrupt and this extra column was accidentally deleted. It will likely not be recreated. At the moment, individual pages will not be updated to reflect the dog near top sizes. More about this distinction can be found Gold Standard Series (Dog Near Top) Label Variations

The years are a generalization as to the the first year the majority of the singles were originally released with the label described.

This is the portion of the Gold Standard Singles catalog released by RCA Records in November 1978. This revelation among other sources of that era, make a strong case that the black label, dog near top series catalog numbers that are not listed in this catalog likely do not exist. While it can be confirmed that the black label, dog near top series records were issued in 1976, I would like confirmation as to when the Gold Standard, black label, dog near top records were first issued. I contend, that the date is a little further out than earlier speculations.

Gold Standard Series Listings

This table is a summary of the Gold Standard Series catalog numbers as found in the 1970 through 1973 Elvis Presley RCA record catalogs. The catalogs are advertisements for the current RCA record listings. The 1970 catalog was printed either in September or October 1969, based on the listings. The 1971 catalog was likely printed in the first quarter of 1971 and the 1972 catalog printed January 1972. This is important, as the 1970 catalog lists not only extended play 45s, but 447-0651 and 447-0652 under the gold standard releases. The first regular issued gold standard 45 with a red label was July 15, 1969. This could imply that 447-0652 and 447-0651 could exist with red labels. Others will disagree with this statement, but it is the belief of this author that 447-0652 and 447-0651 do not exist with a red or orange label. These catalogs are also found on this site.

Red Labels
The scarcity of the red label gold standard 45s may be in direct correlation of these catalog listings. The table below has letters H for half-million sales, M for million sales, D for domestic sales, L listed, and S for sacred listings. The gold standards are found in the catalogs in one or more of these sections.

Based on the table below, where several catalog numbers drop from the 1971 catalog like 447-0604, 447-0614, 447-0631, 447-0645, and a handful more, these have sold into the hundreds of dollars in recent auctions, as they do NOT come up very often. Note that 447-0640 is dropped from the 1972 catalog and is impossible to find. This chart may actually be the key to solving the gold standard series red series riddle, as well supporting the position that many more catalog numbers are not to be found from the black, dog-near-top issues from 1977 onward.

RCA Compact 33 Double Record Guide

Modified: March 28, 2017

The Compact 33 was released in two formats, the Compact 33 single and the Compact 33 double. The Compact 33 double generally contains four tracks whereas the single contains two tracks like their 45 RPM counterpart. The RCA LPC prefix series, which likely means (by my own assertion) Long-Play Compact 33, is an example of the Compact 33 double format.

Compact 33s are 7 inches in size and resemble the 45 RPM except that the hole is LP size. This LPC series do not have a 45 RPM counterpart and are unique. Some of these titles are difficult to obtain. This compilation of the Double Compact 33 Records is based on eBay auctions, price guides, and many search engines.

The Rise and Fall of the Compact 33 Single

Modified: September 11, 2012

In 1960, RCA and a number of major record labels had introduced the compact 33 single in an attempt to create a one-speed format market.1 It was also a year where RCA experienced “a lackluster year with 45 RPM single sales, so January 1961 the Compact 33 RPM was to debut. The logic was that most record players offer a potential for playing 33 singles which didn’t exist until a year earlier.”2 It was a move that many within the industry had thought would take two to five years3 for the market sales to switch from the 45s to the compact 33s. With a shortage of inexpensive automatic 33-speed singles players to discourage promotion of the compact 33 and the majority, of 3,000 discount stores cutting their prices of the 45 RPM from ninety-eight cents to seventy-seven cents, by 1961 the compact 33 as an industry standard was no more.1 This research is a basis for understanding the reason for the extreme values attached to artists such as Elvis Presley Compact 33 singles.

The Launch
RCA Victor launched their Compact 33 promotional campaign with Dr. West whom at that time was the world’s largest manufacturer of toothbrushes. The initial launch would be with at least 25 Compact 33’s in a Highlighter (one side monaural and the other stereo). With an initial order in the million figure, the Highlighters were to be available at over 60,000 outlets at 84 cents which include an attached toothbrush. Media promotion through Life, Seventeen, Ingenue, Playbill, Ebony, Parent’s Magazine, and key newspaper markets. Dealers were to have made available a 350 Compact 33 display. The cost of this promotion was nearly $750,000 ($5,680,000 in 2012 dollars).

Branded as “Dr. West’s presents Tundes for Teens”, this highligher at 88 cents contains the following tracks: Hey There (Sam Cooke), Who’s Gonna Buy You Ribbons (The Browns), Circulate (Neil Sedaka), and Young and Warm and Wonderful (Rod Lauren).

At the end of the Dr. West promotion, this Compact Double 33 was later re-issued with the $1.29 price point making no mention of Dr. West.

The Continued Push

Compact 33s are to be offered in two forms. The Compact 33 single with two songs is offered at 98 cents and the Compact 33 double with four songs offered at $1.49.

George Marek, VP and GM of RCA Victor states the company will be going “all the way” meaning “all singles product will be issued simultaneously on the Compact 33 and 45. The long-term outlook is the 33 RPM speed will eventually phase out the 45 RPM. He also stated that “with the Compact 33, a market can be created for those who like pop music but do not wish to buy or cannot afford a 12-inch LP. The new record should also be appealing to those who want to sample a new artist thru a single and then, if pleased, acquire a long playing record of that same artist.”

Columbia Records has had some recent success using their Compact 33 for promotional programs, mailing stuffers, greeting cards, or specialy items. Their disks generally sell when placed on display at the dealer level.2

billboard-1960-1219-rcaintrocompact33-2RCA Victor announces the Dramatic introduction of the Compact 33 record format. “Basic to the growth of any industry is new product. RCA Victor starts 1961 with the all-important introduction of the Compact 33 single and double. Over a million homes will be introduced to this exciting new king of record by a Special Compact 33 made for a promotional tie-in with Dr. West toothbrushes, supported by a far-reaching national advertising and promotional campaign. This pre-selling of Compact 33 will open new marketing vistas for both Popular and Classical music for the entire industry.

RCA Victor believes that the once profitable classical “singles” market on 78 RPM days can be built into an important segment of the business with the Compact 33. Repertoire will feature popular classics performed by favorite concert artists.”6

billboard-1961-0109-rcacompact331stshipment-1RCA Victor has shipped out the first Compact 33 singles to it’s dealers throughout the country. The first singles on the 33 RPM speed include Della Reese, Andy and the Bey Sisters, the Ames Brothers, Boots Randolph, and Barry Martin. The records are also made available on the 45 RPM format. For the moment, both formats will be shipping to the disk jockeys.7

RCA places a one page add in Billboard highlighting the Compact 33 format for their recording needs. After all, this approach had been documented to work for Columbia records months before.8

Early Adopters

NARM, the National Association of Record Merchandisers is composed of approx. 50 large “record rack jobbers” throughout the country had announced their full support in the merchandising of the Compact 33 single.9

The Potential

“RCA started a great press campaign for its Compact 33 … Connie Francis singing in Spanish and Italian …”10 The important reference to take from this statement is that RCA had hoped that since the Compact 33, particularly the double Compact 33 can hold more “data” then there could be an expansion as to what these singles hold.

A more recent example of this could be taking a DVD and then “upgrading” to a Blu-Ray disc as it will not only provide you with the same entertainment as the original, now being towted as a “standard” however can expand upon the entertainment experience.

The Failure
The music industry did not embrace the Compact 33 format.

2009-09-20-022109-compact33review-1A production manager of WBUC, Buckhannon, WV writes …”At first we thought the compact 33 single was a good idea in as much as it would cut down on the possibility of getting a record on the wrong speed when playing mixed shows using both singles and albums. However, we have fast changed our minds. Actually we can see no advantage whatsoever in changing from the present 45’s to anything! Since the compact 33 is the same diameter, it doe snot offer any advantage in filing. There doesn’t seem to be any noticeable improvement in fidelity. The 45 is so much easier to handle, since you can stick a finger through the holes in a whole stack of records and pick them up without dropping half of them. Both in picking out records for an air show and in using them on my record hops, I find 45’s handy as a pocket in a shirt, while the compact 33 is a pain in the neck. One 33 in the stack fouls up the shole stack or rack of disks.11

2009-09-20-022235-july101961-compact33negreview-2Bob Kidd, KUZN, West Monroes, La., writes, “Would like to congratulate Dale Brooks of WBUC, Buckhannon, WV., for speaking up for the good old standbys, the 45 RPM disks. We agree, and think the industry should stick with the 45’s and leave the compact 33’s to the record retailers.” … Hy Lit, WCAM, Camden, NJ12

The End of an Era
The demise of the Compact 33, by September 1962, the Compact 33 is long discontinued and nearly forgotten.

billboard-1962-0922-compact33dead-1After considering the concept as a retail entity, most diskers called last week were pessimistic. There were recollections of various experiments with new concepts in disks, such as RCA Victor’s compact 33-speed singles, Columbia’s stereo 33, introduced some time before, and others. In none of these cases, did the disks in question make a serious dent in the marketing picture. Fault, in most cases, was laid at the doorstep of Mr. Average Record Dealer, whose problems of inventory were already compounded by the necessity of stocking both stereo and monaural versions of the same LP titles.13

Elvis Presley 33 1/3 RPM Record Guide (US) Checklist
The great Elvis Presley LP catalog is too large to put into one table. In the seemingly endless flow of releases and re-releases, there are patterns which I have broken into the following groups. These tables are not universally accepted in terminology, however, are universally accurate and true. I have visually identified the following catalog and populated the tables accordingly. However, question marks exist where these titles are identified in the price guides and I have not visually seen or these are not identified in the guides, however, seem plausible to exist. These selection changes as album variations are identified.

Long Play / Electronically Reproduced Stereo
Originally, this selection of albums were released exclusively as long play monaural with the prefix LPM to the catalog number. As the technology permitted, this catalog was re-issued in electronically reproduced stereo, also referred to as simulated stereo. This re-issued selection prepends the prefix LSP to the catalog number. LSP for Long Stereo Play. The early 1962 releases of this selection do not contain the (e) at the end of the catalog number on the covers. The (e) is for Electronically Reproduced.

Orange Labels (Rigid, non-flexible vinyl.)
With the announcement of the now known as Elvis’ Comeback Special, the signature album commemorating the event also commemorated the introduction of the new orange label. This grouping of albums were all released with a hard, non-flexible vinyl. Some labels with the two inch diameter circle in label are referred to as rigid vinyl labels. Even those without the circle have been referred to as rigid vinyl, however, a more appropriate term may be non-flexible vinyl.

The introduction of 2A is added to this and subsequent tables to differentiate the tan label sides labeled as Side 1 / Side 2 and Side A / Side B. Originally, this was not added as there was only one known variation, now there are three!

As technology evolved, the standard became a flexible vinyl, that is lighter and considerably more flexible than their predecessors. Some releases include the term “Dynaflex”. All but Welcome to My World, Moody Blue, and the Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii are originally releases in orange labels.

The Camden / Pickwick Releases

In August 1975, RCA sold its entire Camden line to Pickwick. In December, 1975, all of the albums that had originally been on the Camden label were re-issued on Pickwick. This according to Gordon Strenger of Pickwick Records.1

Although these tables break down the majority of the album releases, there are always exceptions to the rule or to the pattern. I have tried to capture each release in the tables above.

The tables are only a piece of the Elvis Presley album collecting puzzle. The generalizations tabled above incorporate and represent the existence of a particular Elvis release with regards to label color. Other variations to the label, include font size, text placement, abbreviated text vs. full text, and other variables that years of producing and different printing plants may introduce.

RCA Catalog of Monaural Releases – LPM-3900 through LPM-3999

Modified: August 3, 2010

By the Late 1960’s record labels were making the final transition from monaural to stereo releases. RCA began phasing out the monaural album releases sometime around 1968. Their catalog numbers were generally released as LPM for Long Play Monaural and LSP for Long-Playing Stereo Popular. In some cases, albums were released only as LPM. In the remaining cases the LPM releases were released in more limited runs than their LSP counterparts. There may be cases where the LSP release may not have a LPM counterpart, although this has not been confirmed. For collectors, the albums beginning with the prefix LPM-3900 and LPM-4xxx are highly collectible.

This table is a listing of RCA albums that have been confirmed either by me or other independent collectors as existing. It is not known (at least by me) whether the remaining albums not listed in the table below exist.

The purpose of this table is to see where the Elvis releases fit in terms of their value. In the LPM-39xx series there are two Elvis releases, one is Elvis’ Gold Records, Volume 4 and the other is Speedway. both are difficult to find and both can command into the thousands of dollars. Several of these titles can be had for only a few dollars, however, several are quite difficult to find.

LPM-1951 Elvis’ Christmas Album – Release Year Determined

Modified: May 19, 2018

It is believed by some collectors that this album was originally released for Christmas 1959, while others believe November 1958. Here is some research that may assist in the actual determination of the date of release or a near approximation thereof. The cover back features Elvis with a medal for marksman and one stripe. Elvis earned his marksman medal 6/23/1958 and was promoted to Private First Class to receive his stripe 11/27/1958. Elvis was promoted again 6/1/1959 to Specialist Fourth Class. With this in mind, a likely release date may be 11/1959.

This conclusion is collaborated by an independent discussion1 that was being conducted in parallel with this research. This discussion was discovered, while this project was being researched. After which, became a member of the board to further contribute and learn. It was through that dialogue that this hypothesis is confirmed to be more than theory.

UPDATE: The original argument that LPM-1951 was released 11/1958 had been proven to some degree to have been incorrect. The November 1959 release date was certainly more consistent with the advertisements of the era. However, definitive proof has surfaced that the actual shipping date was September 25, 1959 to be released in October 1959. This revelation provided by Keith Flynn is provided by the RCA Listing Notice.2
