There is an interesting history behind this tan label release. It was documented to exist in the 1998 edition of The Ultimate price Guide on the King of Rock-And-Roll” by Jerry Osborne. It was removed from the 2002 edition of Presleyana V by Jerry Osborne and has not been listed in any other guide since. Supposedly, it was rumored to exist and no copy ever surfaced. Until this copy, when it was discovered June 24, 2011 and another on August 22, 2011.

The last Elvis album issued simultaneously on the monaural label and stereo labels is also the final monaural release by Elvis on RCA Records. It is not known how many copies were printed or how many remain in existence. Conditions vary considerably, where many copies have clipped corners. However, there are at least two sealed copies that exist, one sold on eBay2 and another offered on Heritage Auctions3 Each is easily identifiable by the angle of the Special Bonus sticker affixed to the shrink-wrap.

The date for shipping is speculated to be June 25, 1968. The reason for this date, is that Billboard reviewed this album in their June 29, 1968, page 103. This did not chart on Billboard until July 6, 1968. Giving this title a full week to hit the stores and I understand that the shipping dates generally ran on Tuesday, hence June 25, 1968. The Listing Notice for this title also lists this title for June 1968.

This record was so elusive it wasn’t documented to exist in a 1976 Elvis Presley discography. “… as far as can be ascertained, no monaural pressings were ever made.”4 Nor is it listed in a 1978 publication as part of the discography.5

Of the reissued MONAURAL labels, this is the most difficult to find. I have seen only seven since 2008. This is one of the most undervalued records. I believe this is rarer than the LPM-3921 Elvis' Gold Records - Volume 4 and as rare as LPM-3989 Speedway.

This variation is interesting for several reasons. The misalignment of the LOVING YOU title occurred between known properly aligned pressings. The label on the back resembles the Hollywood pressing from the viewpoint of the song title alignment and artist credits on the bottom, rather than the labels used on pressings before and after this pressing. A conclusion that may be drawn is that the Rockaway plant may have run out of labels and had to alter the Hollywood label to conform to the standards used at the Rockaway pressing plant. In doing so, the misalignment was made in the title on both sides. This would be corrected when a reorder of labels would be fulfilled. This conclusion is only my speculation based on only what can be read from the matrix numbers. Another interesting observation is that this is a transitional label combination that will lead to the following labels below, where both sides have Elvis Presley credited not in all caps.

Cover Front: RCA Victor logo and number at upper right. Title in any varying pitch of blue. Contents not printed on front. Stock may be either flat or glossy.
Cover Back: Catalog number upper right corner. Contents two rows across the top. Three columns of text. Title and artist centered across the top. The first release March 21, 1958 has the number LPM-1707 with “thirty-one grueling” text, a transitional back has LPM-1707 with “several rehearsal” text1, and a later 1958 pressing has LPM-1707 RE with “several rehearsal” text.

Other than the addition of the “RE” to the back, there is a significant and distinct difference between the LPM-1707 and LPM-1707 RE. From the LPM-1707 back, the beginning of the last sentence of the far left column begins with “After thirty-one grueling “takes” a satisfactory master was finally made, and at this point the boys took a coffee break.” On the back of the LPM-1707 RE, the same sentence reads, “After several rehearsal “takes”, a satisfactory master was finally made, and at this point the boys took a coffee break.” The difference is “thirty-one grueling” was replaced with “several rehearsal“. A transitional back exists where the “several rehearsal” exists on the LPM-1707 back without the RE in upper right corner2.
