Not only did Elvis’ Christmas Album return to the cover, it is incorrectly identified as ANL1-1951(e). This catalog number was assigned to Floyd Cramer’s We Wish You a Merry Christmas, which was previously released under the LSP-3828 catalog. By the time of the ANL1 catalog series, Elvis’ Christmas Album had already been replaced with Elvis Sings The Wonderful World of Christmas with the ANL1-1936 catalog number. The song selection between the two Elvis releases are considerably different.

The September 20, 1947 issue of Billboard Magazine lists Blue Moon of Kentucky and Goodbye, Old Pal by the Bill Monroe and His Blue Grass Boys on Columbia 37888 under Advance Record Releases for Folk music. The image below is a combination of pages 41 and 42 of that issue.billboard-1947-0927-p29

The picture to the right is from the September 27, 1947 issue of Billboard Magazine.

A review of this release is on page 112 of the November 15, 1947 issue of Billboard Magazine. Here it is complete with original spelling errors. “The top tenoring of Bill Monroe, his pipes husky with the grass country flavoring, makes it a nostlagic nicety for his Blue Moon of Kentucky waltz. The mandolin, fiddle and guitar of his Blue Grass Boys capture the spirit of his singing in their playing. For the flip, Monroe takes it at a lively clip and adds a lick of yodeling to his old-time singing of his sentimental Old Pal ballad. For those favoring the old-time singing and playing.”

Blue Moon of Kentucky was recorded by Elvis Presley for his first single, SUN 209, in 1954.

Cover: (3/1981) picture sleeve front and back.1

A controversial sleeve! “This is the first standard catalog Elvis release since 1956 not issued with [a] picture sleeve. Any sleeve for this single is a bootleg.”2 “[I]t was learned that a full-color picture sleeve for this RCA single was being produced [as a bootleg].”3 The picture sleeve was deleted by Joan Deary likely because Elvis is posing with a cigar. The original printed artwork for the deleted cover comes from Joan Deary’s personal collection.4 Apparently some original picture sleeves depicting Elvis with a cigar survived a recall and deletion by a court order. No replacement picture sleeve was issued in it’s place.5

This is a various artists album that was released in 11/1958 containing 12 Top Hits performed studio artists, not by the original artists. There is no reference to any of the vocals on this album. The reason that this is included here is that it includes, Wear My Ring Around Your Neck, which sounds as if it were being passed off as the original. This is a tough album to find.

The word “new” was removed from the “plus an album of new full color photos” statement and right justified. There are also differences in wrapping paper and bows used throughout.

Portable Phonograph Player
…… The tiny phonograph you have here [i]s a very unusual souvenir; It needs no electric power to play, It was invented last year by RCA. READY TO PLAY. 5,7, AND 10 INCH 78 R.P.M. RECORDS. MADE OF HIGH IMPACT PLASTIC. SOUVENIR OF MIAMI BEACH MEETING JUNE 1956 … FROM RCA VICTOR, RADIO AND “VICTROLA” DIVISION. Form 6P33693

The story behind this portable player is the following as it was provided on eBay3. Elvis Presley (and others) – The Sound Of Leadership: Souvenir Of The Miami Meeting June, 1956 – RCA Victor SPD-19 … eight (8) 7-inch 4-song EP’s limited promotional-only souvenir boxed set from 1956 with … boxed RCA plastic “Victrola” PHONOGRAPH kit for assembly and hand play, with rare 78-rpm 7-inch record entitled “A New Sensation In Sales” (RCA GS-NS-5403). This historic recording discusses how this portable, light, hand-played Victrola phonograph [that] was designed to be donated to the State Department to be sent to poor “communist” countries so that they could assemble them in secret and experience and share western media! It is made of hard black plastic with a clear red translucent plastic sound diaphragm and a finger crank to be played by hand… [T]he phonograph is one of the rarest collectible Victor machines, as they were never made available commercially and the State Department did not follow up on the offer. These promotional packages were prepared as souvenirs for company distributors attending the June 1956 Miami meeting (RCA sales convention). The records contain the 32 top selling RCA songs for the previous 50 years (1906 – 1956). The records were originally un-sleeved with RCA advertisement paper separators which are included [(the white sleeves were added for protection)] It is estimated that approximately 75 sets of the EP box were distributed at the convention, and about ten (10) of the tiny assemble-able phonograph kits at a side-meeting for new RCA products. Only about a dozen of the RCA SPD-19 box sets have surfaced over the last several years and we’ve NEVER seen the special phonograph for sale anywhere.

This complete package, phonograph, demonstration record, box set with inserts and records in very impressive condition sold on eBay on April 19, 2014 for just over $600.

Fake alert! On January 10, 2014, the world was introduced to an undocumented SPD-15 box, custom SPD-15 sleeves and five of the ten records. This lot recorded a sale of $2,3433. Two more boxes surface relatively soon thereafter. One sells for $5904 in April 2016 and a third, March 20175. All three of these offerings were sold as original and likely distributed in November or December of 1955. The box is a fake! The Jukebox pictured on the box as a Rock-Ola 1493 Princess which was not produced until 1962/1963. In hindsight, if you look closely at the image, you can see the beginning of STEREOPHONIC. Which was not available in 1955. This can call into question the legitimacy of the record separators and one or more of the jukebox label sets. Purchase at your own risk.

Variation Alert: Check out these two inserts. Subtle but big differences. Note that upper right corner SPD-15 is centered under RCA Victor. On the one on the left printed in black upper left corner. Note that the ADDRESS CORRECTION REQUESTED is on one and not the other. Also note that the Programmed Strip is missing on one and not the other. Interesting variation for an already rare find.34.

RCA-1207 It’s Now or Never / Make Me Know It

Modified: June 15, 2012

Release: RCA 1207 It’s Now or Never / Make Me Know It (78)(UK)
Value: $4,198.32 (Aug 22, 2011 12:49:46 PDT)

RCA-1207-78-side1RCA-1207-78-side2

This auction created a lot of interest with 36 bids up to $4,198.32, and I have read that serious collectors were ready and willing to pay upwards of $9000. A thread in an Elvis forum, FECC, covered this auction until it prematurely ended. The seller, twotenmedia, is no longer an eBay registered user. This is a record that has been suggested to exist, however never confirmed. Please note that the record labels are from the eBay auction, they have been reformatted slightly to display better, that is the reason for the identical background for the record sleeve. Concerns have been raised over the legitamacy of this record.

It has been reported by several Elvis collectors that the labels are inconsistant to the labels of other known 78 RPM record releases for both Great Britain and South African releases. According to one collector1 with an extensive collection of UK singles purchased when new:

It looks like the seller has simply copied the format of the RCA 45’s issued by Decca in those years but has omitted a few items: i) The US Catalogue number which Decca always put in small print on their RCA singles, ii) the matrix number is nowhere to be found (all of my UK 45’s have the matrix number on the label), iii) the notation “Recording first published 1960” is nowhere to be found (this notation was standard on all UK singles of the era).

In addition to the missing items on the lablel, I believe that the last Elvis single issued on 78 by Decca on the RCA label in the UK was “A Mess of Blues” backed with “The Girl of My Best Friend”. The release of “It’s Now or Never” in the UK was delayed by copyright issues, so Decca released “A Mess of Blues” as an A-side and took the above-mentioned song off the Elvis is Back album and put it on the B-Side. When the copyright issues were resolved, Decca released “It’s Now or Never” on 45-RCA-1207 with another song from the “Elvis is Back” album: viz. “Make Me Know It”.

Now for the copyright issue that held up the UK release of “It’s Now or Never”. Since “O Sole Mio” was not in the public domain under UK copyright law, the original composer, Eduardo di Capua, had to be listed on the label. When the record was finally released in late 1960, Mr. di Capua’s name was listed. It is doubtful that the reference to O Sole Mio shown on the label would have satisfied the copyright issue.

Attempts to confirm the authenticity of this eBay listing have come wihout fruition.

The original eBay description

Elvis: IT’S NOW OR NEVER / MAKE ME KNOW IT RCA 1207 Old 78rpm record. UK 78 in Capitol sleeve. Record is on the RCA label. I don’t have a 78 player but it looks to be in pretty good condition – the record is still shiny and there are a few light marks but no scratches. I am sure it will play well. I also have listed a HMV “Hound Dog” 78. I understand how fragile 78’s are, so this will be very well packaged. POSTAGE 4.00 UK / 6.00 elsewhere. PAYPAL preffered but will also accept UK Cheque. Any questions, please ask!!
